Drug driving has been estimated to kill 200 people a year on UK roads*. On 2 March 2015, the law on drug driving changed in England and Wales where new zero legal limits for a range of the most common illegal drugs, including cannabis, cocaine and MDMA (ecstasy) can be tested by a police officer at the side of the road. Your business should have a comprehensive drug testing policy which should determine who is tested, what type of testing is conducted, and under what circumstances. A drug awareness programme for employees should be part of the policy, as well as support for employees with substance abuse problems. Employers must explain their disciplinary procedure, and be regular and consistent within its enforcement.
